When he saw the officers approaching the door, his face paled.
“Please,” he whispered.
Then he looked them straight in the eye.
“Whatever you hear in there—don’t open that door.
The officers exchanged worried glances.
That warning only increased their suspicions.
They forced the door.
A terrible wet and rancid smell immediately filled the room.
His lanterns slowly roamed the darkness.
One of the officers took a step forward.
Then another.
