My heart started beating faster.
“Hello?”
No answer.
I looked around.
The beach was almost empty.
Then I heard it again.
A baby crying.
I followed the sound toward the old changing cubicles near the boardwalk.
One of the doors was slightly open.
I pushed it.
And that was when I saw them.
Two tiny newborn babies.
Two little girls.
They were lying side by side on a wooden bench.
One was wrapped in a white towel.
The other was wrapped in a faded pink towel.
They were so small.
So fragile.
Their little faces were red from crying.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
I just stood there.
Trying to understand what I was seeing.
Someone had left them.
Someone had walked away and abandoned two innocent babies like they were nothing.
My hands shook as I picked up my phone and called emergency services.
But before anyone arrived, I did the only thing I could.
I held them.
I held one baby in each arm.
And something happened that I still cannot explain.
The crying stopped.
Both girls became quiet.
Almost like they knew they were safe.
I remember whispering:
“I don’t know who did this to you.”
I looked down at them.
“But I promise you… someone will love you.”
Those words stayed with me.
Because years later, I realized I wasn’t just talking to them.
I was talking to myself.
The hospital ran tests.
The police investigated.
They searched for their parents.
There were news reports.
Missing person searches.
Questions.
