“The doctors couldn’t tell anyone how long I would live. My dad was scared. My mom was scared too. The difference was that my mom took me home with her fear.”
The room was so quiet that I could hear the woman beside me crying.
Jake smiled.
“I don’t know how many years I have. But I know life isn’t about the number of years you get. It’s about how many people you help feel a little less alone during those years.”
People began standing.
First a few.
Then the entire auditorium.
The applause wouldn’t stop.
I looked at my son and remembered that morning in the hospital.
The pen.
The paperwork.
Mike’s words.
“One day, you’ll wish you had listened to me.”
When Jake finally came down from the stage, he walked over to me.
“Mom.”
“Yes?”
“Do you know now that you made the right decision?”
