Catherine Ringer, Fearless Voice of Les Rita Mitsouko, Dies at 68

Love, Loss, and a Voice Reclaimed

When cancer took Fred Chichin in 2007, it nearly silenced Ringer too. Grief froze her completely — she stopped singing altogether, even privately, unable to find her voice in the absence of her partner and collaborator.

Slowly, though, she returned. She continued as a solo artist, yet never truly alone; something of Chichin remained present in every note she sang afterward.

Beyond music, Ringer became an advocate for women’s rights, environmental causes, and personal freedom, using her platform to push for change long after her biggest commercial successes.

A Legacy That Still Burns

As recently as this past February, Ringer performed live in Paris, still radiating the intensity that had defined her for decades. Few could have guessed it would be among her final appearances.

Now France sits in silence, replaying her music and reckoning with the loss. In Catherine Ringer, the country has lost not just a musician, but a piece of its own restless, defiant heart.
