William was seventy-two, widowed, and completely alone.
I cleaned his house, prepared his breakfast, and did his shopping.
But my salary wasn’t enough.

When Sophie got sick, I could barely afford her medication.
Then my landlord gave me one month to leave because I had fallen behind on the rent.
I remember standing in William’s kitchen that evening, quietly crying.
He walked over to me.
“Laura, what happened?”
I told him everything.
He remained silent for a long time.
A few days later, he called me into his study.
“I know this is going to sound crazy,” he said. “But I’ve fallen in love with you. Marry me.”
I couldn’t speak.
Then he added:
“You and Sophie will have a home here. No one will ever be able to throw you out again.”
I looked at him and thought about my daughter.
And I said yes.
