“Mary, get ready. We’re leaving.”
I stared at the tickets.
“Leaving where?”
“You’ll find out when we get there.”
I laughed nervously.
“Robert, we’re nearly eighty years old. We’re a little too old for mysterious adventures.”
He didn’t laugh.
That was the first thing that worried me.
For the past few weeks, our family had been acting strangely.
Our three children—David, Emily, and Michael—used to call us almost every day. But lately, their calls had become shorter. Whenever I asked what was going on, they said they were simply busy.
A few times, I had caught Robert speaking to them quietly on the phone. The moment I walked into the room, he ended the call.
Even my granddaughter had accidentally said something strange.
“Grandma, Dad said we still aren’t supposed to tell you.”
When I asked what she meant, she immediately changed the subject.
