That Saturday, we went to the grocery store for one reason: that would be the first day Theo went shopping all by himself.
We stood outside the automatic doors. I handed him ten dollars.
“Go in, find one chocolate bar, pay at the register, take the receipt, and come straight back. I’ll be right here.”
Theo repeated it twice, the way he always did.
“Chocolate. Pay. Receipt. Come back.”
That would be the first day Theo went shopping all by himself.
“You’ve got it, buddy.”
He swallowed hard.
Then he stood up straight, like a kid walking onto a stage, and went inside.
I watched him disappear behind the first aisle.
We’d practiced the route together for weeks, but I still wanted to follow. I stayed where I’d promised to wait, proud of him and terrified for him.
“You’ve got it, buddy.”
Five minutes passed.
