“Maybe we should turn around,” Grace said.
“No. Evelyn can’t keep deciding everything.
We contacted the hospital again and asked if we could visit him. The staff explained that the possibility of seeing it would depend on your health and your own wishes.
Evelyn was waiting for us outside of her unit when we arrived.
“You betrayed this family!” he told Grace.
Then he turned to me.
“He’s too sick to bear the impression of seeing a daughter he hasn’t seen in decades.
“Today I heard that I was alive,” I replied.
He threatened to exclude Grace from the family if he went on. For a moment, Grace was paralyzed, just as she was when she was a little girl.
But then he stood by my side.
“We’re both his daughters,” she said to the nurse. We want to know if he wants to see us.
