“I don’t think I’m happy anymore.”
She looked confused.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean I’m not happy in our marriage. I haven’t been for a long time.”
She lowered the shirt she was holding.
“Ross, if something’s wrong, we can work on it.”
I shook my head.
“I’ve already made up my mind.”
She stared at me.
Then asked quietly, “Is there another woman?”
I hesitated.
That hesitation told her everything.
“Who is she?”
“Her name is Whitney.”
Helena closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
I’d expected an argument.
Maybe tears.
Maybe she’d beg me to reconsider.
Instead, she took a slow breath.
“If you’re leaving,” she said, “please pack your things quietly. The children are sleeping.”
I felt strangely offended.
“That’s all you’re going to say?”
She looked at me with an expression I’ll never forget.
