I checked my wallet.
Eleven dollars.
That was all the cash I had.
Then I thought about Helena.
The house we’d once shared.
The woman who had always found a way to keep everything running.
And a terrible idea began forming in my mind.
Maybe she’d help me.
Maybe she still cared.
Maybe, after everything, she might even take me back.
I called my oldest friend, David.
He had known me long before I married Helena.
When I explained my situation, he listened quietly.
Then I mentioned going back to my old house.
“You’re thinking about moving in with Helena?”
“Just temporarily.”
“Has she invited you?”
“Not exactly.”
David sighed.
“Ross, why would you assume she’d agree?”
“We were together for eleven years. We have three children.”
“And you left her for someone else.”
“I know that.”
“Do you?”
His question irritated me.
David continued.
“Look, I can let you stay on my couch while you find another job. But don’t go to Helena expecting her to solve your problems.”
