A Girl Promised to Marry Her Childhood Friend Before Fleeing Poland in 1939 – Decades Later, Her Granddaughter Brought Her a Package and Said, ‘He Says You Must Keep Your Promise’

    I hoped you’d agree.

“Together.”

I touched the tickets.

He hadn’t come to take anything from my present. He wanted to give me back a piece of our past.

I took one ticket.

    “I’m keeping this.”

“And the other?”

We’d return to our street someday.

“You keep it, under one condition.”

    “Anything.”

“No more decisions on my behalf.”

He smiled. “Agreed.”

Margaret nearly exploded when I announced my plans.

“Poland? At ninety-five?”

He wanted to give me back a piece of our past.

“Yes.”

“With a man you barely know anymore?”

    “And my granddaughter, apparently.”

Emma raised her hand. “I’d love to come.”

“Mom, please!” my daughter turned to me. “We lost Dad five years ago. What if something happens to you over there?”

No more decisions on my behalf.

I softened. “Darling, something could happen to me right here.”
