Each time they came grilling with their hands in their pockets.

— Before I bring anything else to the table, I want to clear something up.

Everyone looked at me in surprise.

I took a few envelopes out of the sideboard drawer.

Each one had a name written on it.

We shared them quietly.

My sister-in-law opened the envelope first.

Inside was a sheet.

It simply wrote:

“Promised contribution: fish, sausages and drinks – missing. Estimated value: 850 lei.”

Below the text was another sentence:

“If you didn’t bring the products, you can pay for your share before dessert.”

Her face instantly turned

red.

— Are you kidding?

— Not at all.

I turned my gaze to the others.

— We’ve been organizing barbecues together for five years. For five years you’ve promised to bring something and almost every time you come empty-handed. Instead, you leave with packages of food to take home.

No one said a word.

I continued:

“It’s not about money. It’s about respect.”
